Who We Are

Technically speaking, Harmony Celebration was formed officially in May 2007 in the eyes of its parent organization, Sweet Adelines International. The core of its ranks was pulled from the now-retired, three-time International Champion Ramapo Valley Chorus. More than a third of this 60-plus-member women's chorus have joined in the past few years. And now we’re writing a new history book.

Under the direction of the dynamic Scott Brannon, Harmony Celebration continues its tradition of producing highly entertaining shows and performing in the community on a regular basis. We also seek to represent the highest levels of achievement on the competition stage.

Sweet Adelines International

Founded in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1945, Sweet Adelines started as a small group of women who loved to sing. Since then, it has evolved into an organization of nearly 21,000 singers, connecting women around the world in one sisterhood.

During our first visit to regional contest in April 2008, we earned third place medals and status as the region's Second Place Midsize Chorus. At the 2009 Regional Contest, by earning a solid A- score, Harmony Celebration earned every award that we were eligible for:

  • Overall Champion! (in just our second competition as our reconfigured selves),

  • Most Improved (we gained 69 points over our previous score),

  • First-Place Midsize - Division AA (we had 54 singers on-stage), and

  • The Renee Craig Performance award (with the highest combined showmanship and expression scores of the contest).

Each year, we are thrilled to attend our regional competition in Albany, NY, where we get to celebrate harmony across the wonderfully talented SAI choruses in Greater NY/NJ Region 15. Throughout the years of regional competition, Harmony Celebration has qualified for the annual Sweet Adelines International competition six times. We've traveled to the international competition in Seattle, Denver, Baltimore, Las Vegas, and St. Louis.

What is barbershop?

Barbershop vocal harmony is a style of a cappella music born in the United States during the 1930s—and now shared all over the world. Each of the four parts plays a unique role: generally, the lead sings the melody, the tenor harmonizes above the melody, the bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes, and the baritone completes the chord, usually below the lead.
